Jesus: The light that shines from everyone who knows Me comes from within. There is no need for artificial adornment. But he was already in prison when that attempt to kill you was made on July 20.
Hitler: I needed to get anybody I thought would have knowledge of it. I reacted with immediacy.
Jesus: So justice was swift and ruthless? You get a fairer trial here. You actually get a chance to speak. Your own words might convict you though, so be warned. I will let him speak.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: So, Herr Hitler, we finally meet face-to-face. I knew this day would come.
Hitler: You knew, did you? You could not accomplish even one killing. How could you know!
Bonhoeffer: You can shout all you want. I did not fear you then, even less now. There is a marker now where you hanged me. It reads, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” No, we were not intimidated by the charade of your persona. We saw through you. We knew the evil that lurked inside you. From being a Führer to standing in front of a judge is a long way down, isn’t it?
Hitler: What makes you think I fear you?
Bonhoeffer: You make the same mistake now. Have you seen what is prepared for those who reject the love of God and how you will now spend the rest of eternity?
Hitler: I will get my turn to make my case, wont I?
Jesus: Yes, you will. But Bonhoeffer is not finished yet.
Hitler: Have you ever wondered why, if you were on God’s side in this matter, your stupid plan to kill me didn’t work? Imagine that coward Stauffenberg! He places the device in his briefcase, pushes it toward me, and leaves the room, supposedly to go to the toilet. Kaboom! A few minutes later and he is celebrating, not knowing that someone moved the briefcase unwittingly, and that I was spared. How did your God come through for you then?
Bonhoeffer: You ask how, if I was serving God, the plan didn’t work and He spared you?
Hitler: Exactly!
Bonhoeffer: Let me tell you a little story. It was a cold night in December, 1931. A European politician had finished his lecture tour in New York and had left the famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to visit a friend. As he crossed the street, he forgot to look in the right direction for traffic. Suddenly, thud! He was hit by a car and thrown like a puppet into midair. In his words, “I do not understand why I was not broken like an eggshell or squashed like a gooseberry.”
Hitler: What sort of story is that? How does it have anything to do with what we’re talking about?
Bonhoeffer: Do you know who that was?
Hitler: Am I supposed to know? Of course I don’t!
Bonhoeffer: Are you interested to know who it was?
Hitler: I have no time for games.
Bonhoeffer: It was Winston Churchill. He should have been pulverized on the streets of New York in 1931.
